How to create a professional looking bouquet of flowers

Select the freshest flowers

First and foremost, inspect the flowers to ensure they are fresh, and look for petals that are vibrant and free from discolouration or wilting.

More delicate flowers, such as daisies or tulips, wilt relatively quickly, so if you’re after a long-lasting bouquet, opt for roses, or chrysanthemums.

By carefully selecting the freshest blooms, and considering different arrangement techniques, you can transform even the most ordinary flowers into a beautiful and long-lasting floral display.

You could even purchase more than one bouquet of flowers to elevate your arrangement. Consider mixing different flower varieties, colours, and textures, as combining flowers that are different shapes and sizes will add depth to your arrangement.

Perform flower care steps

The key to a long-lasting, and vibrant floral arrangement, lies within the steps you take to prepare the flowers.

Before arranging your flowers, ensure that all leaves are removed - especially if they will sit below the waterline - as this will help to reduce bacteria, helping the flowers last longer.

You should also cut the stems on an angle roughly an inch from the bottom. This will help to increase the surface area, allowing the flower to absorb more water.

Use the criss-cross method

There are a few different techniques out there to arrange flowers. The criss-cross method is used by florists all over the world, and is a great technique to elevate the look of your bouquet at home.

The technique really is simple, and rather self-explanatory. To do this, simply criss-cross the flower stems over each other as you place them in your vase - starting at the rims and working towards the centre.

Add foliage and greenery

You can also add in some greenery, such as eucalyptus or ferns, to add depth and contrast, and arrange the flowers in a way that avoids overly tight bunches so they don’t look too overcrowded.

You can also cut the stems on the foliage (and your flowers) even further to create different sizes.

Add filler flowers

Once your arrangement is put together, you may come across a few gaps. The best way to solve this is to add some filler flowers - which are typically smaller.

You can choose any filler flowers that you would like, and of course, match the rest of your bouquet. Some popular choices include Baby’s Breath, Snapdragons, Feverfew, and Asters.
